The Bread of life discourse of Jesus from the gospel of John chapter 6 is the revelation of who Jesus is. It is the initiative of God and the invasion of grace. It is the miracle of love because Jesus is the living bread that sustains and nourishes us in our journey. He is the living bread that came down from heaven because God knows that He alone can satisfy us. We are never satisfied with the things of the world. Jesus is the living bread that gives us eternal life because we are meant to live with God forever. He restores our original identity created in the likeness and image of God. He restores our immortality. That is why in the Eucharist it is His Real Presence. We receive the body, blood, soul and divinity of Christ so that we become like Him. The Holy Eucharist is the medicine of immortality. Jesus is the greatest gift of the Father to us. He reveals God’s extravagant love by dying on the Cross, loving to the end and giving His all. He reveals that God’s love is the only true power in the world. His love is undivided, boundless, endless and infinite. So that when we receive Jesus we learn how to love the way He loves with that undivided, unconditional love. Salvation is wholeness, completeness, integrity, undivided. That is the nature of God. And in Jesus we are made whole, complete and we become persons of integrity. And this requires faith so that we respond wholeheartedly to the invitation of Jesus to follow Him because he acts and speaks in the person of the one true God. He is our supreme good, absolute treasure and essential in life. When we follow Him, we become gifts and broken bread to others and that lead us to eternity.
